Smart plugs

A monitoring smart plug sits between an appliance and its socket and measures the electricity passing through it. Depending on your home, suitable products may use Zigbee, Z-Wave or Wi-Fi.

Check the plug’s electrical rating and suitability for the appliance before use, particularly with heaters or other high-load equipment.

FIXED DEVICES

Smart relays

A smart relay is installed behind a conventional switch or elsewhere in a circuit. Compatible relays can expose monitoring and control to Home Assistant while retaining operation from the connected switch or button.

Electrical installation work should be carried out by a suitably qualified person.

POWER TO ENERGY

Devices with watt sensors

Some boilers, air-conditioning systems and other smart devices provide an instantaneous power sensor in watts. Home Assistant may be able to add a correctly described sensor directly to the Energy dashboard. Where only power is available, its Integral helper can calculate accumulated energy for use as an individual device.

WATER USE

Track specific water devices.

Home Assistant also supports individual water consumption. Possible sources include smart water meters with device-level monitoring, inline flow meters for a particular appliance, and connected appliances that report their own water use.

AVOID DOUBLE COUNTING

Set upstream relationships.

If a circuit meter includes several separately monitored devices, or a main water meter includes appliance meters, Home Assistant can record the larger meter as the upstream device. This parent-and-child relationship lets the dashboard show where consumption comes from without counting the same use twice.

1. Add every related energy or water entity as an individual device first.
2. Edit the downstream device and select the already-added parent as its upstream device.
3. Review the dashboard totals to confirm the hierarchy represents the real installation.
