AirGradient combines multi-sensor indoor monitoring with an open approach to hardware, software and data. Recoheat can use compatible readings through Home Assistant to place air quality in the context of your rooms.

INDOOR CONDITIONS

One view of several measurements.

The current AirGradient ONE specification combines sensors for carbon dioxide, fine particles, temperature, humidity, volatile-organic-compound trends and nitrogen-oxide trends. Its display and configurable LEDs can show current conditions locally, while Wi-Fi sends data to a chosen platform.

VOC and NOₓ index readings show relative change rather than a laboratory-style absolute concentration. Everyday substances can also affect VOC readings, so context matters.

DATA QUALITY

Tested sensors with published limits.

AirGradient publishes the sensor modules, measurement ranges and accuracy claims used in its assembled monitor. It describes multi-step testing and calibration, and lists RESET Air among the certifications for the assembled AirGradient ONE. The self-assembly kit uses the same core hardware but AirGradient states that the kit does not carry the assembled product’s certifications or test report.

AirGradient also reports recognition from independent product reviews and the AIRLAB Microsensors Challenge. Always check the current model and evidence before treating an award or certification as applicable.

OPEN BY DESIGN

Choose where the data goes.

AirGradient publishes code, schematics and design files under an open licence and supports use with its own platform or other systems. With current firmware, AirGradient says the ONE supports native Home Assistant discovery. Its community also maintains connections for platforms such as ESPHome, Prometheus and openHAB.

Use Home Assistant to expose compatible readings to Recoheat and relate them to a room.

Wider contribution

Owners can choose whether to share eligible outdoor-monitor data with public initiatives such as OpenAQ.

SCHOOLS & RESEARCH

Monitoring as evidence and education.

AirGradient describes a school programme in which students can assemble monitors without soldering, work with real measurements across science and mathematics, and adapt open-source code and dashboards. It also says it supplied 2,000 monitors to the UK SAMHE project, a large study of classroom air quality.

School deployments can use alerts and continuous data to identify ventilation problems, investigate pollution sources and support discussions about building improvements. Health, learning and energy claims should be checked against the underlying research and the circumstances of each building.

USE READINGS WELL

Placement and context remain essential.

  • Keep the monitor away from direct heat, steam and unusually localised pollution unless that source is what you intend to measure.
  • Compare indoor and outdoor conditions when deciding whether pollution originated inside or entered from outside.
  • Consider ventilation, occupancy, calibration and sensor limitations when interpreting changes.
  • Use trends and corroborating evidence before drawing conclusions about health, causes or equipment performance.
